Participation in Athletics and Performance-Based Co-Curricular Activities

Many students take part in significant co-curricular activities that present real scheduling challenges. When the Work College Program assigns positions to entering students, it takes these activities into account and looks for placements with flexible or daytime scheduling to minimize conflicts for both students and departments.

When a student interviews for a position, they should share their schedule with the prospective supervisor so both can determine whether the activity can be accommodated. Students should also give their supervisor advance notice of upcoming events, so accommodations can be discussed ahead of time. Supervisors are encouraged to offer scheduling flexibility for College-sponsored activities that are rigidly scheduled and depend on a student's participation, such as intercollegiate athletics or theatre performances.

Students are responsible for making up any hours missed due to College-sponsored activities. While these activities matter, they do not override a student's Work College Program responsibilities. Missing work for these activities without prior arrangement may be considered an unexcused absence and could result in follow-up according to program guidelines. Any conflict that cannot be resolved directly with a supervisor should be brought to the Program Office.
