Off-Campus Traditional Employment Policy (Non-College)

Berea College recognizes the evolving needs of our students and their desire for work opportunities beyond campus. In response, the College is updating its policy to allow students to engage in off-campus (noncollege) traditional employment while remaining enrolled.

Academic and Work-Learning-Service Program Expectations Remain the Priority

Academic studies and participation in the Work-Learning-Service (WLS) Program remain the central commitments for all Berea College students and constitute a full-time load. As such, while students are now permitted to pursue off-campus work, they must continue to meet all academic and WLS obligations. Please note that an off-campus external job does not replace your on-campus WLS commitment.

First-Year Student Eligibility

First-year students are not eligible to engage in off-campus employment. This policy is designed to support a successful transition into college life and ensure students successfully adjust to the academic, WLS, and community expectations of Berea College. First-year students are encouraged to focus on building strong foundations in their coursework, WLS position, and campus engagement.

Guidance on Workload and Balance

The College strongly encourages students to be mindful of their workload and well-being. While students ultimately need to make the best decision for themselves, the College recommends that students not engage in more 10 hours per week of off-campus employment. Balancing academic success, WLS responsibilities, and personal well-being is critical, and students are highly encouraged to carefully consider their ability to manage these commitments effectively.

Financial Aid Considerations

Students should be aware that off-campus employment may have a negative impact on their financial aid package since income and assets must be reported on future FAFSAs. For instance, earnings from 2025 would need to be reported on the 2027-2028 FAFSA. At the time of filing a FAFSA, the current value of any savings and/or checking accounts must also be included. While it is rare that a student would earn enough to significantly impact their aid eligibility, it is important to consider this possibility before accepting an off-campus job. For more information, please see Student Financial Aid Services.

Approval Process No Longer Required

Previously, off-campus employment required approval from the Dean of Student Labor. This requirement has been lifted, though students should still consult with campus advisors if they have concerns about balancing these responsibilities.

Berea appreciates our students' dedication to their academic and professional growth and trust them to make informed decisions regarding their commitments. Please contact the WLS Program Office for guidance if you have any questions.
