EDS 480 Found. Special Ed: Secondary

Prerequisite: EDS 325

This introductory course provides a foundational understanding of the legal frameworks and principles guiding special education practice. The course emphasizes an integrated approach to the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) standards and the Collaboration for Effective Educator Development, Accountability, and Reform (CEEDAR) Center’s High-Leverage Practices for Inclusive Education. Students will learn to make instructional and organizational modifications to meet the diverse academic, physical, emotional, and social needs of learners with exceptionalities in general education classrooms. The course explores current legislation and special education processes, focusing on learners with a range of needs, and learning exceptionalities, twice-exceptional learners, English Language Learners, those experiencing readiness challenges, and students with behavioral concerns. Additional topics include developing skills in addressing the achievement and attendance gap, co-teaching models, fostering family involvement, and understanding teachers’ rights and responsibilities under federal laws and related policies.
