Dress and Hygiene

The Program Office supports establishing dress requirements that are appropriate for the work performed in each department. Some positions may require mandatory safety protection (e.g., hard hats, safety shoes, chaps, goggles), hygiene materials (e.g., gloves, hair nets), or other work-specific items. Departments are responsible for assisting students with expenses in the following situations: when a uniform or uniform style of dress is required, or when the use of safety protection, hygiene materials, or other work-specific items is mandatory. Supervisors may contact the Program Office for funds to help cover the cost of required attire for students.

Departments that regularly interact with the public may set reasonable appearance standards. These should be communicated to first-year students during position orientation and to returning students during the interview and hiring process. To prevent misunderstandings, it is recommended that supervisors review these standards with all students at the start of each term.

All students are expected to maintain a basic standard of hygiene and cleanliness, regardless of their position or department.
