Faculty Absences
Per the “Teaching and Scheduled Responsibilities” section of the Faculty Manual, faculty are expected to be available on campus while teaching. Occasionally professional or personal business may require a faculty member to miss one or more classes. When such absences can be anticipated, arrangements should be made for the class to be covered. If the absence is to be for only a day or two, the Division Chair should be informed of Department Chair absences of a day or two. For longer absences, both the Department Chair and the Division Chair should be informed of the arrangements, and the Provost Development’s approval is required.
In the event of illness or other difficulty that prevents meetings of classes, the Department Chair should be notified as soon as possible. The Department Chair is to inform students and the Division Chair. If the absence is to be extended more than one class period, the Division Chair and Provost Development must be informed, and other members of the department may be asked to assist by carrying the colleague’s load temporarily. Such arrangements usually suffice for emergency situations, but if the absence extends beyond two weeks a suitable replacement will be sought.
