CHM 452 Advanced Organic Chemistry

Prerequisite: CHM 222

This course will further develop an understanding of valence bond and molecular orbital theories, and introduce conformational analysis, to predict the reactivity and stereochemistry of more advanced organic chemistry reactions. Selected topics include molecular rearrangements, kinetic versus thermodynamic controlled reactions, enolates and enamines, concerted pericyclic reactions, sigmatropic rearrangements, the Woodward-Hoffmann Rules, multi-step synthesis, drug synthesis, the chemistry of heterocyclic compounds, and macromolecular chemistry. At the end of the term, each student will teach a "named reaction," or a reaction named for the chemists(s) that discovered it, that they find interesting to the class. There will be three 70-minute lectures each week.
